Layout Design Proposal Production Floor Facilities Based Lean Manufacturing at CV. Raja Aluminum Uses Value Stream Mapping and Modified Squirrel Search Algorithm
Abstract
CV. Raja Aluminium is a manufacturing company engaged in the production of household equipment made from aluminum, such as display cases, showcases, and dish racks. Based on the results of observations, several problems were identified, including inefficient production flow, the occurrence of non-value added activities, as well as backtracking, by-passing, and cross movement between workstations, which increase the material handling distance. Therefore, this study aims to propose a redesign of the production floor layout to achieve a more efficient facility layout using the lean manufacturing approach. The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) method is used to map the production flow and identify six non-value added activities through Process Activity Mapping (PAM), which are then eliminated using the 5W + 1H method. Furthermore, to generate the best layout alternative capable of minimizing material handling distance, the Modified Squirrel Search Algorithm (MSSA) is applied as the optimization method. The implementation of MSSA shows an improvement in the initial layout’s line efficiency rate from 52,15% to 83,70%. The results of this study indicate that the application of a lean manufacturing-based layout with the combination of VSM and MSSA can reduce non-value added activities, decrease the initial lead time from 299,10 minutes to 215,47 minutes after improvements, and optimize material flow. Thus, the proposed facility layout can improve the efficiency of the production process at CV. Raja Aluminium.
