Revitalization of The Grand Inna Medan Using Juxtaposition Approach
Revitalisasi Grand Inna Medan Menggunakan Pendekatan Juxtaposisi
Abstract
Juxtaposition is a design technique that combines contrasting elements to
create visual tension and dialogue. In the context of heritage architecture,
this technique plays a crucial role in preserving cultural identity while
simultaneously introducing modern innovation. As such, juxtaposition allows
for the integration of historical values with contemporary needs, resulting in a
richer and more meaningful spatial experience for users.
This research aims to explore the application of the juxtaposition concept
in the design of a Five-Star Hotel and Restaurant within the Grand Inna
Medan area. The hotel was selected as a case study due to its status as a
historic building that has successfully adapted to the passage of time without
losing its original character. The research method used is literature study,
with an in-depth analysis of various sources related to juxtaposition, heritage
architecture, and the design of luxury hospitality facilities.
The results of the study indicate that the implementation of juxtaposition—
particularly through the combination of traditional and modern elements—
can create a strong and engaging visual dialogue. Moreover, the importance
of considering historical and cultural context in the design of Five-Star Hotels
and Restaurants within heritage buildings is evident in the meaningful
interactions it fosters. This not only enriches the cultural experience of
visitors but also enhances appreciation for architectural heritage in public
spaces.
