The Role of Picture Book Illustration on Reading Interest among Upper Grade Elementry School Students in Medan

The low reading interest among elementary school students has become a major
concern in the field of education, as it affect students learning achievement. One
potential way to increase students' reading interest is through the use of picture book
illustrations. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether illustrations play a
role in the reading interest of upper-grade elementary school students in the city of
Medan. This study was conducted on 79 subjects, selected through purposive
sampling techniques. The research instruments consisted of an illustration rubric
based on image components from the KaBsKAP guidelines (2022) and a reading
interest scale developed based on the interest aspects by Schunk et al. (2014). Data
analysis was carried out using simple linear regression. The analysis results showed
a p-value of 0.391 (p > 0.05) and a t-count of 0.863, which is lower than the t-table
value (1.990). Therefore, it can be concluded that illustrations do not yet play a
significant role in reading interest.
