    Abstract
Background: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a delayed muscle pain caused by micro-damage to the muscles after high-intensity, eccentric sports activities or different types of exercise from before. Micro-damage to the muscles will trigger an inflammatory response and increase creatine kinase (CK) levels in the blood. Sport massage has been shown to accelerate muscle recovery. However, in general, the massage oil used does not contain ingredients that have topical effects. Red ginger has a high content of active substances such as gingerol and shogaol. These compounds have strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The effectiveness of the combination of sports massage with red ginger oil on reducing muscle pain and creatine kinase (CK) levels due to DOMS has not been widely studied. Objective: To analyze the effect of sports massage with red ginger oil on reducing muscle pain and creatine kinase due to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in Muay Thai athletes in Medan. Method: This study was an experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design method. A total of 20 athletes who met the inclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups, namely group K (given sports massage with mineral oil) and group P (given sports massage with red ginger oil). Sports massage intervention was given 3 times a week for 2 weeks. Evaluation of CK levels was carried out through blood tests before and after the intervention, while the muscle pain scale was assessed using the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS). Statistical analysis was carried out using the Independent T Test to see the difference in muscle pain values and CK levels before and after sports massage, as well as the Pearson correlation test. Results: The results of the independent T-test showed that in the test of the difference in the effect of sports massage on reducing muscle pain in Muay Thai athletes, a p value of 0.00 (p <0.05) was obtained, which means that there is a significant difference in reducing muscle pain between the two groups before and after the sports massage intervention, while in the test of the difference in the effect of sports massage on CK levels, a p value of 0.025 (p <0.05) was obtained, which means that there is a significant difference in reducing CK levels between the two groups before and after the sports massage intervention. In addition, the results of the Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was a relationship between reducing muscle pain and reducing CK levels after the sports massage intervention (r = 0.654) Conclusion: sports massage with red ginger oil has been proven to be more effective in reducing the perception of muscle pain and creatine kinase levels compared to sports massage that does not use topical ingredients. In addition, there is a strong relationship between reducing muscle pain and reducing CK levels, indicating that increasing muscle pain is influenced by increasing CK levels.
