Pusat Mode Ulos dengan Pendekatan Arsitektur Berkelanjutan

Abstract

Ulos is a cultural heritage of the Batak people, rich in symbolic meaning and with strong potential for modern fashion innovation. Yet, the ulos weaving industry faces serious constraints, including limited capital, inefficient distribution, and a lack of design innovation. Simultaneously, Medan’s dynamic fashion scene and its trend-driven consumer market create a promising opportunity. This study proposes the design of the Ulos Fashion Center—a dedicated hub for education, production, and promotion of ulos—integrated with principles of sustainable architecture. The design emphasizes cultural preservation while incorporating renewable energy, local materials, and climate-responsive strategies. As a pioneering facility in Medan, the Ulos Fashion Center aims to bridge traditional heritage and modern fashion demands, fostering ulos as a valuable, competitive fashion product. It is envisioned as a cultural landmark, a learning space for designers, and a catalyst for sustainable creative economies in the fashion and tourism sectors. Beyond preserving heritage, this center represents a strategic response to the absence of facilities that holistically promote ethnic fashion within a sustainable built environment. It aspires to position ulos as a global trend, accessible and celebrated by diverse audiences.
