Patriotism in Generation Z Categorized as Poor in Medan City
Abstract
Patriotism is an important aspect in the formation of national identity, especially 
among the younger generation living in limited socio-economic conditions. This 
study aims to describe the level of patriotism of Generation Z, who are categorized 
as poor in Medan City, based on the dimensions of blind patriotism and constructive 
patriotism, and reviewed from age, education, and political orientation. This study 
uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The research subjects 
numbered 100 people selected through accidental sampling technique. The 
measuring instrument used was a patriotism scale based on the theory of Schatz et 
al. (1999), which has been modified and tested for validity and reliability by Zahra 
(2025). The results of this study indicate that the blind patriotism dimension, the 
results are moderate (92%), while the constructive patriotism dimension is high 
(77%). Based on age, most respondents have moderate blind patriotism (92%) and 
high constructive patriotism (77%). Based on the last education, blind patriotism is 
dominantly moderate (94%) and has high constructive patriotism (96%), and based 
on political orientation, blind patriotism tends to be moderate (92%) and 
constructive patriotism is high (77%).
