Antibacterial Effectiveness of Binahong Ethanol Extract Mouthwash (Andredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) Against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923
Abstract
Asepsis is an important measure in preventing infection by creating conditions free of pathogenic microorganisms in living tissue. One common aseptic practice in dentistry is the use of mouthwash. However, long-term use of chemical-based mouthwash can disrupt the balance of normal oral flora and trigger resistance in pathogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, an effective and safe herbal-based mouthwash alternative is needed, one of which is binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis), which is known to contain active compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, and terpenoids with synergistic mechanisms of action as antibacterial agents. The objective of this study was to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) ethanol extract mouthwash against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. This was an experimental laboratory study using a post-test only control group design. The testing used the broth dilution method to determine the MIC and the agar dilution method to determine the MBC, with varying concentrations of binahong ethanol extract mouthwash at 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and a positive control (Alloclair plus mouthwash). The test results were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests, which showed significant differences between treatment groups (p<0.005). Therefore, it can be concluded that the binahong ethanol extract mouthwash (Andredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) is effective in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 with MIC at a concentration of 25%, while the MBC is not yet known.
