Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest bauxite reserves in the world, yet
most of it is still exported in raw form. To support the government's downstream
mineral program and reduce dependency on imported alumina, a preliminary design
study of a Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA) plant using the Bayer process was
conducted. This study aims to produce high-quality alumina from local bauxite ore
and evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of the plant establishment. The
plant is designed with a production capacity of 1,000,000 tons per year, using
bauxite and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as the main raw materials. The production
process includes four main stages: grinding, digestion, precipitation, and
calcination. The final product is alumina (Al₂O₃) with a purity of 98.98%. Economic
analysis results show that the total investment required is IDR 5,243,941,979,617,
with an estimated annual net profit after tax of IDR 1,112,021,550,997. The Break
Even Point (BEP) is achieved at 30.55% production capacity, the Return on
Investment (ROI) is 20.94%, the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is 22.49%, and the
Pay Out Time (POT) is 11 years and 4 months. Based on these indicators, the project
is declared technically and economically feasible and has strategic potential to
support national downstream initiatives and job creation
