Social Solidarity Among Street Vendors at Car Free Day (CFD) in Medan City (A Study of CFD Vendors Around Lapangan Merdeka, Medan)
Abstract
Car Free Day (CFD) is a regular event held every Sunday morning in the center of Medan City, specifically around Lapangan Merdeka. In addition to serving as a public space for physical activities, CFD also functions as an informal economic hub for small-scale vendors. At this location, various types of vendors gather to sell their goods and engage in social interaction. This study aims to describe the forms of social solidarity that develop among the vendors, as well as the factors that influence it. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving 14 informants, consisting of vendors, buyers, and security personnel within the CFD area. The results of the study indicate the presence of two forms of social solidarity based on Emile Durkheim’s theory: mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. Mechanical solidarity is reflected in the shared economic goals and common values among the vendors. Meanwhile, organic solidarity is evident through the interdependence among vendors who play different roles in supporting the continuity of trading activities. The presence of informal communities also strengthens solidarity, although new vendors still face challenges in becoming fully involved.
