Moral Values Through Character in the Film Lucca’s World
Abstract
Background: Lucca’s World, directed by Mariana Chenillo and based on the memoir The Two Hemispheres of Lucca by Bárbara Anderson, depicts the struggles of a family in Mexico seeking experimental Cytotron treatment in India for their child with cerebral palsy.
Objective: This study aims to identify and interpret moral values such as cooperation, responsibility, compassion, patience, and empathy conveyed through the characters and narrative of Lucca’s World, and to evaluate the effectiveness of characterization techniques based on the theories of M.J. Murphy, Kohlberg, and Lickona.
Method: Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research involves observation and content analysis of the film's dialogue, character interactions, and plot development including the family's emotional journey to India for experimental Cytotron treatment.
Results: Six out of nine of Murphy's characterization techniques are effectively applied in the film, resulting in a narrative that is vivid and morally meaningful. The film portrays the family's emotional journey, including financial burdens, maternal guilt, and familial support, which naturally illustrate these moral values. Visual representation and cinematography enhance the emotional strength of the story, with a warm and hopeful tone as they celebrate each of Lucca's progress milestones.
Conclusion: Lucca’s World proves to be an effective medium for character education. By combining strong characterization, compelling narrative, and profound moral values, the film not only entertains but also fosters moral awareness and supports the development of ethical behavior in social life.
