dc.description.abstract | Background : Black onion is the result of processing red onion in controlled temperature and humidity without the use of any additives for 12 days. Onions have generally been utilised for various properties, one of which is as an anti-inflammatory. Onions are believed to have anti-inflammatory activity because they are rich in flavonoids and contain various organosulfur compounds. The processing of red onion into black onion results in changes of the composition of compounds with an increase in flavonoids and organosulphur level compared to fresh onion. Objective : To determine the anti-inflammatory activity and the effective dose of black onion (Allium cepa L.) ethanol extract that has anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan-induced rats. Method : The study uses an experimental method to research. The anti-inflammatory testing of black onion ethanol extract uses the carrageenan-induced paw oedema method on the soles of hind legs of male white rats wistar strain that are induced with λ-carrageenan. Measurement of oedema volume was observed using a digital plethysmometer every 30 minutes for 360 minutes. Test animals were grouped into negative control group (0.5% Na-CMC suspension), positive control (Diclofenac Sodium 4.5 mg/kgBB dose), test group of Ethanol Extract of Black Onion (EEBH) with dose of 25 mg/kgBB, 50 mg/kgBB, and 100 mg/kgBB. Data in the form of percent inflammation and percent inhibition of inflammation were analysed by ANOVA test with Post Hoc Tukey and Kruskal-Wallis test on the SPSS program. Result : EEBH 100 mg/kgBB has the highest percent inhibition of inflammation of the three doses and it isn’t significantly different from the positive control Na-diclofenac (p > 0.05). Percent inhibition of inflammation of EEBH dose 50 mg/kgBB isn’t significantly different from dose of 100 mg/kgBB (p > 0,05). Conclusion : EEBH doses of 25 mg/kgBB, 50 mg/kgBB, and 100 mg/kgBB have anti-inflammatory activity. EEBH dose of 100 mg/kgBB provides the best anti-inflammatory activity from the 30th minute. EEBH dose of 50 mg/kgBB also has anti-inflammatory activity, although it gives an effect from the 150th minute. | en_US |
