Analysis of Intergenerational Communication Styles in the Work Environment of PUPR Competency Development Center Region I Medan
Abstract
This study is entitled "Analysis of Intergenerational Communication Styles in the Work Environment of PUPR Competency Development Center Region I Medan". The focus of this study is on the two dominant generations in the work environment, namely generation X and generation Y. Differences in values, backgrounds, and understanding of technology between generations X and Y are believed to influence the way they communicate in the organization. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six main informants and one triangulation informant, and supported by researcher observations. The results of the study indicate that generation X tends to use a formal communication style, with a preference for direct or face-to-face communication. Meanwhile, generation Y is more flexible and adaptive, with a tendency to use digital technology and build participatory and open communication. Despite the differences, both generations are able to build harmonious communication thanks to an inclusive and familial work culture, as well as a willingness to adjust to each other. This study concludes that understanding intergenerational communication styles is very important in creating an effective and collaborative work environment. Theoretically, the results of the study enrich the understanding of the dynamics of intergenerational communication in organizations. Practically, this study provides recommendations for organizations to design communication strategies that can bridge generational differences to improve team performance and collaboration.
