The Role of Parengge-Rengge Women in Parenting Children in the Family (Case Study in Onan / Tarutung Market, Tarutung District, North Tapanuli Regency)
Abstract
This thesis is written to look at the role of women parengge-rengge
(traders) in parenting children in the family, with a focus on women traders in Tarutung Market. This research is motivated by a social phenomenon in which Toba Batak women who work as traders also take on the role of family breadwinners. Women traders carry out their role as breadwinners and child caregivers, and face various challenges in balancing economic and domestic responsibilities. The purpose of this study is to analyze the parenting process
applied by women traders, identify the obstacles they face, and review the impact of parenting on children's development. By understanding these dynamics, the author hopes to provide insight into the link between women's economic activities
and the parenting system in the family. The method used by the author in this research is descriptive qualitative
method. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with women traders and their family members, and documentation studies related to the social and economic aspects of their lives. Data analysis techniques were carried out descriptively and interpretatively to understand the
relationship between the roles of women traders and the parenting patterns applied. The results showed that inang parengge-rengge practiced adaptive parenting by implementing various strategies to stay involved in their children's lives despite time constraints. Parenting patterns applied by inang parengge
rengge families are very diverse ranging from democratic, authoritarian, to permissive parenting. This diversity is influenced by various factors such as education level, economic conditions, and spousal support. Democratic parenting
encourages the growth of children's independence, while permissive or authoritarian patterns in some cases have a negative impact, such as weak supervision or emotional pressure on children.
