This study aims to examine the relationship between family functioning and parenting styles with academic motivation among Batak ethnic university students. The research employed a quantitative correlational method, with data collected through Likert-scale instruments: the Indonesian version of the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) consisting of 28 items, the Indonesian version of the Chinese Family Assessment Inventory (ICFAI) consisting of 32 items, and the Indonesian version of the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) comprising 24 items. The respondents in this study were 1,017 active university students of Batak ethnicity, selected through accidental sampling. The data were analyzed using a non-parametric technique, namely Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient test. The results showed a significant positive relationship between family functioning and academic motivation (r = 0.318; p < 0.001), indicating that higher levels of family functioning are associated with higher academic motivation. In addition, the authoritative parenting style had a significant positive relationship with academic motivation (r = 0.337; p < 0.001), whereas the authoritarian parenting style showed a significant negative relationship (r = -0.130; p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the permissive parenting style did not exhibit a significant relationship with academic motivation (r = 0.036; p = 0.253).en_US
