Located in the densely populated area of Jalan Prof. HM Yamin, Medan, this thesis project
proposes the design of a multifunctional convention center on a 1.6-hectare site previously
occupied by residential and commercial buildings. The site presents both challenges and
opportunities to introduce a large-scale public facility within an urban context. The design
repositions the convention center as a dynamic hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and
community interaction by supporting a wide range of activities such as workshops, startup
exhibitions, concerts, art showcases, and national or international conferences. By
emphasizing spatial flexibility, smart technology integration, and a user-centered approach,
the project adopts modular strategies and adaptive interior configurations for long-term
sustainability. The architecture is designed to transform according to functional needs while
ensuring efficient space utilization and responsiveness to changing demands. The
architectural expression is shaped through optimized pedestrian access, active public
spaces, and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions. Sustainability aspects are addressed
through passive design strategies, the use of renewable energy, and environmentally
friendly materials aligned with green building principles. The project aims to create an
architectural landmark that fulfills the functional requirements of a modern convention
center but also contributes positively to the social, economic, and cultural life of the city of
Medan in a sustainable manner. Through this approach, the convention center aspires to
become a future-oriented civic space that adapts, inspires, and urban communities.
