dc.description.abstract | Fractures are caused by a number of factors related to the aging process, as bone
density decreases with age. The development of modern medical practices for the
treatment of fractures by the government and private sector has always been
accompanied by the development of traditional medicine practices. This is shown
by traditional medicine that remains alive and becomes a model of alternative
medicine in society. The utilization of karo oil is generally used in daily treatment
for colds, because karo oil has no chemical content and side effects, it is safe for
daily use. Traditional fracture treatment is the choice of the community for
reasons such as being cheaper and the demographics of living far from health
facilities and the experience of the closest people who influence the decision to
choose traditional treatment. The number of fracture incidents in 2018 reached
92,976, and in North Sumatra reached 3.74%. So, this study aims to, (1) find out
how people's perceptions of the use of karo oil in the treatment of fractures and
other treatments; (2) find out how people's perceptions are related to the reasons
for the choice of traditional medicine for fractures compared to modern medicine;
(3) find out how people's perceptions of the existence of karo oil as traditional
karo local wisdom that needs to be preserved. . This study found that the Medan
Selayang community has a positive perception of traditional medicine using Karo
oil, indicated by the high belief in the effectiveness of the treatment, especially in
treating fractures, sprains, and muscle pain. These perceptions are formed from
direct experience, cultural heritage, and a social environment that supports the
practice of traditional medicine. These practices reflect the values of kinship,
social solidarity and local wisdom in the community. Traditional medicine
practitioners often perform social functions similar to medical social workers, as
they provide emotional, social and spiritual support to patients. This study
provides recommendations to those who treat fractures, those who sell karo oil,
those who receive traditional treatment for fractures, policy makers and scholars
related to preserving and promoting information related to traditional treatment
of fractures using karo oil. | en_US |
