Abstract
This thesis is titled "The Dynamics of the Function of LapoTuak in Huta Kasindir, Jorlang Hataran District, Simalungun Regency” and aims to examine the social and cultural transformations occurring in lapo tuak in Huta Kasindir, Kec. Jorlang Hataran. Traditionally, lapo tuak serves as a gathering place to enjoy local beverages; however, it has undergone a shift in function to become a covert venue for prostitution. This research employs a qualitative approach using participatory observation and in-depth interviews with lapo owners, visitors, and the surrounding community. The findings indicate that economic, social, and cultural factors contribute to the change in the function of lapo tuak. In the economic context, the increasing financial needs have prompted some lapo owners to offer sexual services as an additional source of income. Furthermore, the social stigma attached to covert prostitution creates a complex dynamic in the interactions between visitors and sex workers, where local norms are often disregarded in favor of economic gain. This study also reveals that although covert prostitution in lapo tuak is not officially recognized, the practice continues with various forms of social negotiation. These findings provide new insights into how public spaces can serve dual functions in the context of social change, as well as the challenges faced by communities in responding to this phenomenon. Thus, this thesis is expected to contribute to the understanding of social and cultural dynamics in society and its implications for public policy related to prostitution and public spaces.
