    Abstract
This study discusses the history of Pematangsiantar Zoo (THPS) from 1996 to 2012, which was an important period of major transformations in its management and social role. Since being transferred from government management to PT Unitwin Indonesia Medan under the leadership of Dr. H. Rahmat Shah, Pematangsiantar Zoo has undergone a comprehensive change that reflects the real form of a modern zoo transformation. This transformation includes the construction of facilities, improving services, and adding a collection of rare animals as part of a commitment to biodiversity conservation. In this context, THPS not only acts as a place of recreation, but also as an education and conservation center that actively voices the importance of wildlife protection to the wider community. In addition, this study also highlights the contribution of Pematangsiantar Zoo in encouraging local economic growth and opening up job opportunities, making it an institution that has a significant social impact. The method used in this study is the historical method consisting of heuristic stages, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained through literature studies, field observations, and interviews with various related parties. The results of the study show that the transformation of THPS into a modern conservation institution faces various challenges such as limited resources, the need to improve animal welfare, and criticism from the community, but still shows a commitment to continue to develop as a conservation center in North Sumatra.
