This study discusses the efforts to redesign traditional markets in
Pangururan District, Samosir Regency, with a neo vernacular
architectural approach. The purpose of this study is to explore how
the principles of traditional local architecture can be adapted and
developed in modern market design, so as to maintain local
cultural identity and meet the functional needs of contemporary
society. The characteristics of traditional Batak Toba architecture
studied with the neo vernacular concept is the method used in this
study with a theoretical-qualitative nature. The results of this study
indicate that the application of local elements such as roof shapes,
the use of natural materials, and traditional community spatial
patterns, can increase cultural cohesion, strengthen the character
of the area and create a more friendly and sustainable public
space. It is hoped that this study can be a conceptual basis for the
development of other traditional market designs in similar areas.
