Abstract

This study investigates the translation methods and the quality of the English version of the Putri Mambang Linau folklore. The objectives of this research are (1) to identify the translation methods used in the English version, (2) to analyze how these methods affect the translation quality, (3) why are certain translation method more preferred than others. The study applies Peter Newmark’s (1988) translation method framework and Nababan’s (2012) Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) model. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes 230 sentences (115 in the source language and 115 in the target language). Findings reveal that the overall translation quality score is 2.43, indicating slightly above moderate quality based on Nababan’s criteria. The majority of sentences were translated using communicative and semantic methods, suggesting a deliberate effort to maintain both faithfulness to the original and accessibility for English-speaking readers. Less frequently used methods; idiomatic, literal, faithful, and adaptation were applied selectively, often to convey cultural nuances or specific narrative tones. The study concludes that the interplay between Newmark’s methods and Nababan’s TQA framework offers a comprehensive understanding of translation quality. It demonstrates that method choice directly influences the accuracy, readability, and acceptability of the translation, ultimately impacting how well the story resonates with its target audience.
