The Main Characters in John Millington Synge’s Riders to the Sea

Abstract
Background: Drama is a form of literary work that conveys stories through the conversations and actions of the characters. Riders to the Sea by John Millington Synge features main characters who experience the loss of family members and live in difficult natural conditions.
Objective: To explain how the main characters Maurya, Bartley, Cathleen and Nora are portrayed in the play.
Methods: This study used descriptive qualitative method with the main data from the play and supporting data from various literature sources. The analysis was conducted based on nine characterization techniques according to Murphy.
Results: The four main characters are described clearly. Maurya is described as a mother who patiently faces loss, Bartley as a responsible son, Cathleen as a firm and rational daughter, and Nora as a caring and helpful sister.
Conclusion: The portrayal of the main characters shows the impact of harsh natural and living conditions on their characters, and supports the main theme of the play.
