Abstract
Background: Plot is one of the important intrinsic elements in literary works, including in a movie as a modern literary work. The Meg 2: The Trench is an action-adventure movie that depicts a battle between humans and ancient creatures that endanger life. The plot in this movie has an important role in creating a complete storyline for the audience.
Objective: This research is focused on describing the plot stages and plot types found in The Meg 2: The Trench movie.
Method: This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The writer observes the storyline of the movie in detail and notes the sequence of the narrative based on Gustav Freytag's five stages of plot theory, namely exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The type of plot used in this movie is also described based on Christopher Booker's The Seven Basic Plots theory.
Results: The movie The Meg 2: The Trench has a storyline that is sequenced through five sequential plot stages. Starting from the introduction of the character, the conflict develops to the climax, leading to a decrease in tension, and ends with a resolution after the threat is successfully overcome. The plot type in this movie is a category of the Overcoming the Monster, because the movie tells the struggle of the main character while facing a threat in the form of ancient sea creatures.
Conclusion: The plot in The Meg 2: The Trench can be described through the plot stages according to Freytag and is classified as the Overcoming the Monster plot type based on Christopher Booker's theory.
