Figure of Speech in Laufey's Selected songs
Abstract
Background: Figurative language plays an important role in literary works,
including song lyrics. Many songwriters use figures of speech to convey deep
messages to their audience indirectly.
Research objectives: This study aims to identify and analyze the types of figure
of speech found in selected songs by Laufey. It also examines how figurative
language enhances the artistic and emotional impact of the music.
Method: This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data were
collected through library research and analyzed using Perrine’s theory of figures
of speech. The researcher examined seven songs by Laufey: Promise, From the
Start, Haunted, Lovesick, Dreamer, Serendipity, and Bewitched.
Results: The analysis revealed 24 instances of figurative language in the songs,
including simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, symbol, paradox,
hyperbole, and irony. The study also identified the most dominant type of
figurative language used in the selected songs.
Conclusion: By interpreting figurative language, listeners gain a deeper
understanding of the songwriter’s intentions. This research is expected to benefit
readers in understanding figurative language in song lyrics and serve as a medium
for learning language styles through music.
