Complication resulting from diabetes mellitus (DM) may include both macrovascular and microvascular disorders, as well as neurological complications such as neuropathy. Diabetes self-management encompasses healthy eating, maintaining physical activity, regular blood glucose monitoring, adherence to medication regiments, good psychosocial health, and adopting risk-reducing behaviors. However, these activities often required significant behavioral changes and strict adherence to complex regiments. This study aims to explores in depth the experiences of families in supporting diabetes self-management practices. A qualitative research design with a descriptive phenomenological approach was used. A total of 12 participants were selected through purposive sampling at the Teaching Hospital of Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan. Data were collected through in-depth interviews lasting 30-60 minutes. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Data collection instruments included demographic questionnaires, interview guides, field notes, voice recorders and the researcher as the primary instrument. The analysis revealed nine major themes related to family support in diabetes self-management: dietary management, physical activity management, medication management, stress and emotional regulation, spiritual support, utilization of health care services, early detection and complication management, caregiver roles in the family, and challenges faced by caregivers. The role of family caregivers is highly significant and should be continuously strengthened to ensure optimal self-management among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, prevent complications, and improve quality of life.en_US
