Study of the Characteristics of Sumatran Orangutan Nest Trees (Pongo abelii) at the Sikundur Research Station
Abstract
The Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) is an arboreal animal and is classified as
a rare species protected by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and
Natural Resources (IUCN) as critically endangered. The objective of this study is
to identify the tree species that serve as nesting sites for the Sumatran orangutan
(Pongo abelii) at the Sikundur Research Station and to determine the
characteristics of the nesting trees of the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) at the
Sikundur Research Station. The method used in this study is an exploratory survey
method. Data collection was conducted using purposive sampling techniques. The
results of the study identified 33 tree species used as nests, belonging to 15 families,
with a total of 100 individuals. The dominant tree height was found to be 16–20 m,
the dominant tree diameter was 20–29 cm, the dominant crown type was spherical,
the dominant branching type was monopodial, the dominant nest class was class D,
the dominant nest position was 2 and 3, and the dominant nest shape was round.
