Penurunan Kadar Besi (Fe) dan Mangan (Mn) pada Air Sumur Bor Kawasan Tempat Pembuangan Akhir (TPA) Terjun Kecamatan Medan Marelan dengan Karbon Aktif
Abstract
The availability of clean water is a challenge, especially for the community around Terjun landfill. Terjun landfill is located in Terjun urban village, which is located in Medan Marelan sub-district. In one of the residents' borehole water contains harmful pollutants such as heavy metal ferrous (Fe) 0.7115 mg/L and heavy metal manganese (Mn) 1.4500 mg/L, therefore an effort was made to reduce heavy metal levels by batch static adsorption method. Activated carbon is a porous solid that is often used to purify water. Many studies on activated carbon only look at the potential of raw materials for the manufacture of activated carbon, but do not review how effective the use of repeated activated carbon is. This study investigated the potential use of commercial activated carbon (CAC) as an adsorbent for ferrous (Fe) and manganese (Mn) metals in borehole water against variations in contact time and the use of repeated activated carbon (Adsorbent Reusability). Determination of ferrous (Fe) and manganese (Mn) metal levels before and after the addition of activated carbon using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed that the concentration of ferrous metals (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in borehole water after the addition of activated carbon to the variation of contact time 5; 10; 15; 20; and 25
minutes decreased by 91.56%; 98.73%; 98.73%; 98.73% and 98.73% and absorption
of manganese metal (Mn) by 95.62%; 94.17; 95.24%; 94.89% and 94;41%. optimum time with the highest percentage (%) for absorption of iron metal (Fe) at 10 minutes with a concentration of 0.0009 mg/L of 98.73% and 5 minutes for manganese metal (Mn) with a concentration of 0.0635 mg/L of 95.62%. Result of adsorbent reusability conducted 4 times repetition where the adsorption capacity decreases for the best repetition that meets the standard, namely in the first and second use. The percentage (%) of ferrous metal (Fe) adsorption capacity was 93.53%; 47.01%; 28.03% and on manganese metal (Mn) adsorption of 99.72%; 75.72%, 85.24%. The commercial activated carbon used can be reused twice.
