    Abstract
A study has been conducted on the use of chitosan in the formulation of Peel Off Mask gel preparations as an antioxidant. Facial masks are very popular beauty care cosmetics to improve skin quality. Peel off facial masks are one type of facial mask that has the advantage in its use, namely that it can be easily removed or lifted like an elastic membrane. Peel off facial masks are formulated with active substances, PVA base, softening agents, moisturizers, preservatives, surfactants and fragrances. Chitosan has attracted widespread attention in the field of cosmetics. Peel Off Mask gel preparations made with the addition of chitosan can improve the quality of the preparation as an antioxidant. Its properties as an antioxidant are interesting to develop because it can stabilize free radicals as a UV ray scavenger. Antioxidant testing using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer with the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1- pycrilhidrazyl) method. The reaction process between antioxidant compounds and DPPH radicals occurs through a hydrogen atom donation mechanism. This study aims to formulate a Peel Off Mask gel where chitosan is added with three concentration variations, namely 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%. The best Peel Off Mask gel preparation is with the addition of 0.5% chitosan. The process of making chitosan Peel Off Mask gel preparation uses experimental methods and characterization is carried out using parameters in the form of homogeneity, pH, viscosity, physical stability, hedonic, irritation and antioxidant tests. The results of the evaluation of the Peel Off Mask gel preparation during 12 weeks of storage showed that the Peel Off Mask gel met the homogeneity test requirements, the pH value of the Peel Off Mask gel preparation was in accordance with the physiological pH requirements of facial skin The unstable viscosity value is caused by the addition of cera alba or beewax which can bind oil so that the preparation becomes thicker which can increase the viscosity value during storage. Antioxidant activity test using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1- pycrilhidrazyl) method obtained the highest percentage (%) of gel Peel Off Mask antioxidant inhibition, namely with the addition of 1.5% chitosan, namely 87,89%.
