Mangupa at Horja Godang of the Angkola Batak Ethnicity: A Pragmatic Study
Abstract
This research is a pragmatic study that focuses on "Mangupa in Horja Godang of Batak Angkola Ethnic Group". This research aims to describe the stages of mangupa implementation, how the sentences are formed, types of speech acts, and the functions of speech acts in them. To analyze the data, a descriptive qualitative approach is used, including data collection, analysis, and presentation. The stages of mangupa in Horja Godang of Batak Angkola ethnic group include: (1) customary deliberation, (2) marburangir (giving betel leaves), (3) giving itak poul-poul, and (4) mangupa (giving prayers and advice). The sentence forms found in the speech of Batak Angkola ethnic mangupa include: (1) declarative, (2) interrogative, and (3) imperative. The functions of speech acts are classified into five, namely: (1) representative, (2) commissive, (3) directive, (4) declaration, and (5) expressive. Meanwhile, the speech acts identified by George Yule are (1) locution, (2) illocution, and (3) perlocution.
