| dc.description.abstract | This study aims to determine the relationship between the effectiveness of academic and social interpersonal communication and the motivation of students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FISIP USU), who work while studying. Students who carry the dual role of being both learners and workers face complex challenges in maintaining their academic motivation. Effective interpersonal communication, especially within academic and social contexts, is presumed to have a positive influence on their level of motivation. This research employs a quantitative approach using a survey method with purposive sampling and snowball sampling techniques. The total number of respondents is 30 FISIP USU students who work while studying. The research instrument is a questionnaire using a Likert scale, which is analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test, as the data are not normally distributed. The independent variable in this study is the effectiveness of interpersonal communication, which includes openness, empathy, supportive attitude, positive attitude, and equality. Meanwhile, the dependent variable is student motivation, which consists of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, academic commitment, time management, and personal goals. The results show a strong and significant positive relationship between the effectiveness of interpersonal communication and student motivation (ρ = 0.632; p < 0.001). This means that the higher the effectiveness of interpersonal communication, the higher the motivation of students in pursuing their studies while working. | en_US |
