Study of Mechanical Properties of Motorcycle Clutch Lining Made From a Mixture of Bamboo Fiber, Carbon Powder and Epoxy Resin
Abstract
Clutch is a machine to connect two shafts at both ends with the aim of transmitting rotation from the engine. clutch as a machine element which is currently widely used in industrial machinery, motor vehicles and others. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of variations in the composition of bamboo fiber, carbon powder with epoxy resin matrix on the mechanical properties (hardness, wear rate, and tensile strength) of motorcycle clutch lining samples. The research consisted of several stages, including screening of materials (bamboo fiber and carbon powder) with a mesh 50 sieve with an opening of 297 μm, weighing materials with digital scales, mixing materials with horizontal ball milling for 2 hours at 300 rpm, mixing materials with epoxy resin and stirring using a stirring spatula for 5 minutes, then pressing (compacting) 2 tons for 15 minutes, then the green compact specimen was sintered at 150⁰C for 30 minutes with an electric muffle furnace. Tests include hardness (brinell), wear test with pin on disk method, and tensile strength. The results of this test show that the composition of materials with 30% bamboo powder, 30% carbon powder and 40% epoxy resin obtained a brinell hardness value of 30.327 BHN, for wear testing obtained a spin on disk wear value of 0.99 x 10-6 mm3 /Nmm, and for tensile strength testing obtained a value of 17.079 MPa. In this study, the hardness and wear values with variations in the composition of 30% bamboo powder, 30% carbon powder and 40% epoxy resin greatly affect and are good for application to motorbikes.
