Penentuan Kadar β-Karoten dalam CPO (Crude Palm Oil) Menggunakan Spektrofotometri UV-Visible di Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit
Determination of β-Carotene Levels In Cpo (Crude palm Oil) Using Uv-Visible Spectrophotometry At The Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit
Abstract
Beta-carotene is a natural compound found in crude palm oil (CPO) and gives the oil
its red color. CPO contains relatively high levels of beta-carotene, making it a source
of provitamin A and a natural antioxidant.. This study aimed to determine the βcarotene content in CPO using the UV-Vis Spectrophotometry method in accordance
with the MPOB quality standards. Using UV-VIS Spectrophotometry at the Palm Oil
Research Center. The UV-Visible Spectrophotometry method is an analytical method
that uses UV and visible wavelengths as absorption areas to detect compounds. The
results of the β-carotene content determination used an absorbance of 446 nm. Based
on the research results, the β-carotene value in the CPO sample code D was 705.48
ppm, code E 498.88 ppm, and code F 309.75 ppm. meets the MPOB quality standard
of 500-700 ppm. This study successfully measured the β-carotene content in crude
palm oil (CPO) using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 446 nm. The
analysis results showed that the CPO samples coded D (705.48 ppm) and E (498.88
ppm) had β-carotene content that nearly met or was within the MPOB quality standard
range (500–700 ppm), while the sample coded F (309.75 ppm) was below the standard
limit. Therefore, it can be concluded that several samples met the β-carotene quality
standard as stipulated by the MPOB, and the use of the UV-Vis spectrophotometry
method proved effective for this analysis.
