    Abstract
The preservation of static archives is an essential effort in safeguarding documents of historical, legal, and informational value to ensure their integrity and availability for future generations. This study focuses on the efforts undertaken in preserving static archives at the Archives Office of the University of North Sumatra and how challenges encountered in the preservation process are addressed. The objective of this research is to identify solutions for overcoming the various obstacles faced by the archive management in preserving static archives. A qualitative research approach was employed, with data collected through interviews with archive personnel, direct observation of archival preservation activities, and documentation of supporting sources. The findings show that the Archives Office of the University of North Sumatra has implemented both preventive and curative preservation methods. Preventive measures include temperature and humidity control in archive rooms, the use of metal shelving, restrictions on bringing food into archive areas, and regular monitoring for pests. Curative measures are applied to archives with minor to severe damage, including document separation and repair. The study also reveals several ongoing challenges in the preservation process, such as limited human resources with expertise in archival science, inadequate conservation equipment, and budget constraints. To address these issues, the Archives Office has initiated internal training, improved coordination between work units, and established cooperation with the National Archives Agency. In conclusion, the preservation of static archives at the Archives Office of the University of North Sumatra has been carried out reasonably well despite several challenges. It is recommended that the quality of human resources be enhanced, the provision of facilities and infrastructure be improved, and continuous awareness be raised regarding the importance of archival preservation to ensure the sustainability of archives as the collective memory of the institution
