Factors Related to Work Stress in Employees at the Population and Civil Registration Office of Binjai City
Abstract
Employees of the Population and Civil Registration Office have the responsibility to carry out government affairs and provide services in the field of administration and civil registration to the community. Factors such as interpersonal conflicts, excessive workload, mental demands, limited time to complete tasks, and pressure from the public demanding fast service can potentially lead to job stress. If not handled properly, it can have an impact on employee mental health, work productivity, and the quality of public services. This study aims to determine the factors related to work stress in employees at Population and Civil Registration Office of Binjai City. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional quantitative method involving 40 functional staff employees. Data collection was done through interviews using a questionnaire. Measurement of job stress using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and variables of interpersonal conflict, quantitative workload, mental demands and social support using the NIOSH Generic Job Stress Questionnaire. The Spearman Rank Correlation test was used to analyze the data which showed a relationship between the variables of interpersonal conflict with a value of (p=0,004), quantitative workload with a value of (p=0,001), mental demands with a value of (p=0,011), and social support with a value of (p=0,002) with job stress. Meanwhile, there is no relationship between gender, marital status, and tenure with job stress. From the results of the study, 19 employees (47.5%) experienced moderate work stress, 12 employees (30%) experienced severe work stress, and 9 employees (22.5%) experienced mild work stress. For employees, it is necessary to improve communication skills and teamwork, complete tasks by managing work time well, take advantage of breaks by resting, and strengthen solidarity and a culture of mutual support in the work environment in order to maintain emotional balance and reduce employee work stress.
