Code-Switching And Code-Mixing In The Interaction Of The Malay Community In Pematang Panjang Village, Limapuluh Pesisir Subdistrict, Batu Bara Regency: A Sociolinguistic Study
Abstract
This study aims to identify the types and factors causing code-switching and code-mixing in the interactions of the Malay community in Desa Pematang Panjang, Kecamatan Lima Puluh Pesisir, Kabupaten Batu Bara. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques including recordings and transcriptions of direct conversations from everyday interactions. The data were analyzed based on code-switching and code-mixing theories by Chaer & Agustina and Suwito. The results show that the types of code-switching occurring include internal and external code-switching, with language shifts from Malay to Javanese and English. Meanwhile, code-mixing occurs in the form of inserting English words into Malay sentences. The factors causing code-switching and code-mixing include speaker factors, interlocutors, the presence of a third speaker, changes in communication situations (formal and informal), social, psychological, educational, economic factors, speaker status, and communication context. This study provides insight that language interaction within the Malay community of Desa Pematang Panjang is influenced by socio-cultural context and technological development, resulting in dynamic and varied language use in everyday communication.
