An Analysis Of Code Switching On Twitter (X) A Sociolinguistic Study
Abstract
Twitter was chosen as the research object because it is one of the most widely used social media platforms in Indonesia for expressing ideas, feelings, and opinions spontaneously. This study aims to examine the forms and functions of code-switching used by Twitter users from a sociolinguistic perspective. The data were collected from 50 tweets written by active Twitter users that contain code-switching elements between Indonesian and foreign languages, especially English. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a sociolinguistic approach. Types of code-switching are classified based on Poplack’s (1980) theory, namely tag switching, intersentential switching, and intrasentential switching. Meanwhile, the functions of code-switching are analyzed using Koziol’s (2000) framework, which includes fourteen functions such as personalization, emphasis, clarification, and others. The results show that intrasentential switching is the most dominant type used, followed by intersentential switching and tag switching. In terms of function, the most frequently found code-switching functions are emphasis, personalization, and substitution. These findings indicate that code-switching on social media is not only used for stylistic purposes but also serves complex communicative functions closely related to the speaker’s identity and social expression.
