| dc.description.abstract | Background: Popular songs are not merely entertainment tools, but cultural texts rich in symbolic meaning. One of the most notable bands known for their profound lyrics is Led Zeppelin. Their songs reflect spiritual, mythological, and existential themes through deep symbolic expressions. Tracks like Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir, The Battle of Evermore, Ramble On, and No Quarter offer interpretive complexity that invites deeper analysis.
Objective: This study aims to identify and describe the symbolic elements found in five selected Led Zeppelin songs and to interpret their meanings using contemporary semiotic theories. It also seeks to analyze how these symbols reflect cultural, mythological, and psychological values relevant to human experience.
Method: This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with semiotic analysis. Primary data consist of official lyrics from five selected songs, analyzed using Chandler’s theory of signs, Hall’s theory of representation, Jung’s concept of archetypes, and Barthes’ modern mythology. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed to uncover recurring symbolic themes within the lyrics.
Findings: The results show that Led Zeppelin's lyrics contain rich symbolic representations of spiritual journeys, moral dualism, existential struggle, and utopian longing. Symbols such as “stairway,” “piper,” “Mordor,” and “Shangri- La” serve as metaphors for the inner human journey. The musical atmosphere also supports and intensifies the symbolic meaning within the lyrics.
Conclusion: Led Zeppelin’s lyrics function as cultural texts embedded with symbolic depth. These symbols not only enhance the songs’ aesthetic value but also mirror psychological and ideological dynamics in modern society.
