This study aims to identify and interpret the visual signs embedded in the
characterization of the animated film Inside Out 2 through the lens of Roland Barthes’
semiotic theory. Applying a qualitative descriptive method, the research used the
animated film as its data source. The data consisted of nine images depicting each
character, with particular attention to signs such as colors, costumes, and facial
expressions. These visual signs were analyzed using Barthes’ framework of
denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings revealed that each character was
constructed with distinct visual signs, which were interpreted using Roland Barthes’
semiotic framework of denotation, connotation, and myth. At the denotative level,
features such as color, facial expression, and costume directly signified specific
emotions. Connotatively, these elements conveyed deeper emotional and
psychological meanings. At the mythic level, the signs reflected broader cultural
ideologies embedded within the film.
