Cultural values are principles or ways of life that are highly upheld by a society and reflected in various aspects of life, including literature. Literature, particularly the legend of Datu Kandibata, functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for the transmission of cultural values. The purpose of this research is to describe the cultural values contained in the legend of Datu Kandibata and to analyze the perception of the Kandibata Village community toward the story. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data were collected through interviews with four informants from different backgrounds. The findings indicate that the legend of Datu Kandibata contains cultural values, including: (1) the relationship between humans and nature, represented by unity with nature; (2) the relationship between humans and society, represented by mutual cooperation (gotong royong); (3) the relationship between humans and others, represented by morality, hospitality, and affection; and (4) the relationship between humans and themselves, represented by hard work. The community's perception of this folktale includes three main aspects: their knowledge of the story’s content, the truthfulness of the events, the moral messages in the legend of Datu Kandibata, the relevance of the story to community life, knowledge of rituals or traditions related to the story, and the level of belief and involvement in such rituals. The legend of Datu Kandibata is known as "Guru Penawar Remai." Based on the Likert scale results, the percentage of the Kandibata community’s perception of the legend is 80,9% indicating that the community agrees with, still recognizes, and wishes to preserve the legend of Datu Kandibata.en_US
