The Relathionsip of Personal Hygiene and Physical Environmental Conditions with the Incidence of Scabies at Darul Falah Aek Songsongan Islamic Boarding School in Asahan District in 2025
Abstract
Scabies is still commonly found in densely populated areas because it is easily transmitted through direct contact. Infection with Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis is characterized by skin lesions and intense itching at night. In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that over 200 million people worldwide were affected by scabies at any given time, with over 400 million new cases occurring annually. In Southeast Asia, scabies is among the top 10 skin diseases with the highest incidence rate, with a Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) burden reaching 153.86 cases. This study aims to investigate the relathionsip between personal hygiene and physical environmental conditions with the incidence of scabies at the Darul Falah Aek Songsongan Islamic Boarding School in Asahan District. This study employed an analytical method with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 120 female students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires and observations of physical environmental conditions. Univariate and bivariate data analysis results indicated a significant association between bedding cleanliness (p<0.001), personal hygiene (p<0.001), towel cleanliness (p<0.001), clothing cleanliness (p<0.001), humidity (p<0.001), lighting (p<0.001), and ventilation (p<0.001) with scabies incidence. However, there was no significant association between skin and hand cleanliness (p>0.053) and genital cleanliness (p>0.377) with the occurrence of scabies. All student dormitory rooms were found to have occupancy densities that did not meet the required standards. Based on these findings, students are advised to maintain personal hygiene by avoiding the sharing of clothing, towels, bedding, or blankets. Towels should not be used when damp, should be dried in the sun, and should not be washed together with those of others. Additionally, students are advised not to sleep on others' bedding or share mattresses.
