This study aims to understand the motives of students in engaging in online parlay ball gambling. In addition, this study also examines how “because to motive” and “in order to motive” from the phenomenological theory put forward by Alfred Schutz. The method used in this study is qualitative. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The unit of analysis in this study consists of 8 informants who are students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of North Sumatra, who provide a description of the “because to motive” and “in order to motive” of students playing online parlay ball gambling. Determination of informants is done using snowball sampling technique. By applying Alfred Scutz's Phenomenology theory, the results showed that the motives of students in playing parlay ball gambling are divided into two, namely because to motive and in order to motive. Because to motive includes the influence of the social environment, economic factors, and the perception of winning opportunities. Meanwhile, in order to motive reflects the purpose of students playing, such as getting financial benefits, seeking pleasure, or channeling soccer hobbies. The findings also show that students' involvement in parlay ball gambling is influenced by the normalization of gambling in the social environment and the ease of access through digital platforms.en_US
