dc.description.abstractThis study discusses Speech Events in the Marunjuk Custom of the Batak Toba Ethnic Group in sociolinguistic study. The purpose of this study is to describe the stages in the Marunjuk custom of the Batak Toba ethnic group and the speech events that occur in the Marunjuk custom of the Batak Toba ethnic group. The theory used to analyze the data is the theory of sociolinguistics proposed by Dell Hymes. The method used in this research is a qualitative method. The results of this study indicate that the stages in the Marunjuk custom consist of nine stages, namely: 1) entering the banquet hall 2) tudu-tudu sipanganon 3) dengke simudur-udur 4) manjalo tumpak 5) mambagi jambar 6) marsiseanan 7) handing over penandaian 8) handing over tintin marangkup 9) mangulosi 10) tingkir tangga/paulak une (ulaon sadari). There are 57 data of Speech events in the Marunjuk custom using the (SPEAKING) theory. The setting and scene are held in a party building or guest house. Participant at event were hula-hula, suhut, parsinabung, tulang, dongan tubu, boru, bere, ale-ale, pandita, and all the event venue. Ends in this event are to answer statements from the person you are speaking to, give blessings, receive blessings, pray, give thanks, give advice and welcome. The acts of sequence contained in the sentences in this program are formal speech forms, complete sentence, incomplete sentences, statements, questions and commands. There are several keys to this event, namely short, neutral voice, lowered voice, raised voice, feeling happy, happy, touched and full of hope. The instrumentalities in this event are spoken language. The norms of interaction and interpretation at this event are politeness, mutual respect, mutual appreciation. The genres contained in this program are dialogue, narrative, proverbs, advice and pray.en_US
