The purpose of this study is to identify the semiotic elements and meaning of
monuments at Universitas Sumatera Utara with various forms of abstract
paintings, statues, monuments, and other types. This monument aims to provide
location instructions to make it easier for people and students to find a place they
want to visit. The theory used in this study uses the Semiotic Theory of C.S.
Pierce, which explains a Representation, Object, and Interpretation. The design of
this study uses a qualitative descriptive method and uses a type of data collection
in the form of documentation. The data source is a portrait of a monument image
collected based on the results of interviews from some monument contained in the
study. The researcher deliberately uses a qualitative method to describe the
theories and specific intentions of a monument in the study to explain the meaning
of the written instructions, the color of the monument, the symbols on the
monument, and the design on the monument.
