Materialism in Jane Austen’s Novel Mansfield Park and Edith Warthon’s Novel The House of Mirth: a Comparative Literature

Abstract

This thesis entitled Materialism in Jane Austen’s novel Mansfield Park and Edith’s Warthon’s novel The House of Mirth: A Comparative Literature analyzing about materialism, an idea which focuses on material possession. This idea will make people consider money as their central of happiness. This thesis also analyzes about the differences and affinities of materialism in both of the novels. This thesis uses Comparative Literature. In studying comparative literature, literary study can be done by taking two of literary works, but these works have different countries literature. The writer uses the descriptive-qualitative method that describes the analysis according to the description of the results related to the research in this thesis. The results of this analysis, in comparative the differences and affinities in materialism idea, the affinities is more dominated than the difference in both of the novels.

Skripsi ini berjudul Materialism in Jane Austen’s novel Mansfield Park and Edith’s Warthon’s novel The House of Mirth: A Comparative Literature yang menganalisa tentang materialism ialah suatu ide yang berfokus terhadap materi. Ide ini yang akan membuat orang menganggap bahwa uang merupakan pusat kebahagiaan. Skripsi ini juga menganalisa tentang perbedaan dan persamaan materialisme yang terjadi di dalam kedua novel tersebut. Skripsi ini menggunakkan sastra bandingan. Didalam mempelajari perbandingan sastra, pelajaran sastra dapat dilakukan dengan mengambil dua karya sastra, tetapi karya-karya sastra ini Negara yang berbeda. Di dalam tulisan ini penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang menjelaskan analisis sesuai dengan uraian hasil penelitian yang terkait. Hasil analisis tersebut, dalam membandingkan perbedaan dan persamaan dalam ide materialisme, persamaan lebih mendominasi di dalam kedua novel tersebut.
