Analysis of Verbal Abuse in Interpersonal Communication among Students of Methodist School Lubuk Pakam
Abstract
This research is titled “Analysis of Verbal Abuse in Interpersonal Communication among Students of Methodist School Lubuk Pakam.” The research method used is qualitative. The aim of the study is to identify the phenomenon of verbal abuse occurring in the interpersonal communication of students at Methodist School Lubuk Pakam, the causes of verbal abuse in their interpersonal interactions, and the impacts of such abuse. The theory used is Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The research involved 8 student informants, consisting of 4 junior high school students and 4 senior high school students. This study applied purposive sampling and snowball sampling techniques. Data were collected through observation and interviews. The researcher employed several data analysis techniques, including data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The findings show that verbal abuse has become normalized among students at Methodist School Lubuk Pakam. The causes of students engaging in verbal abuse include negative influence from home and abusive friendships, feelings of anger or frustration, and harmful social media content. The impacts of verbal abuse include regret, conflict or physical fights, and receiving negative judgments from others.
