Pengaruh Lama Perendaman Basis Gigi Tiruan Nilon Termoplastik Dalam Ekstrak Lidah Buaya (Aloe Vera) Terhadap Penyerapan Air
The Effect of Soaking Time of Thermoplastic Nylon Denture Base in Aloe vera extract towards Water Absorption
Abstract
Thermoplastic nylon is chosen as the base for dentures because it is flexible and aesthetic, but it easily absorbs water and accelerates the colonization of microorganisms. The aloe vera plant is used as an alternative to disinfect dentures because its content has antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. This study aims to determine the effect of soaking duration of nylon thermoplastic denture bases in 75% concentration aloe vera extract for 8 hours, 56 hours, 240 hours, and 720 hours on water absorption. The research design used is a laboratory experimental design. The samples used were cylindrical thermoplastic nylon, totaling 32 samples divided into 2 groups, with each group consisting of 16 samples. Each sample was tested with a digital scale to determine the amount of water absorption, and the data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test to determine the effect of the immersion duration of the thermoplastic nylon denture base after being immersed in alkali peroxidase and 75% aloe vera extract for 8 hours (1 day), 56 hours (1 week), 240 hours (1 month), and 720 hours (3 months). The results of this study show the average value and standard deviation of water absorption of the thermoplastic nylon denture base soaked in alkaline peroxide for 8 hours is 0.002 ± 0.004, for 56 hours is 0.217 ± 0.143, for 240 hours is 0.176 ± 0.154, and for 720 hours is 0.308 ± 0.223. The average value and standard deviation of water absorption of the thermoplastic nylon denture base soaked in 75% aloe vera extract for 8 hours is 0.002 ± 0.002, for 56 hours is 0.740 ± 0.635, for 240 hours is 0.260 ± 0.265, and for 720 hours is 0.145 ± 0.120. There is a significant effect (p=0.001) of the duration of immersion of thermoplastic nylon denture bases in alkaline peroxide and 75% aloe vera extract for 8 hours, 56 hours, 240 hours, and 720 hours on water absorption. The 75% aloe vera extract can be considered a natural alternative in denture care for short-term use.
