Gender Politics A Study of Halimah Binnti Yacob as Singapore’s First Elected Famale President In 2017
Abstract
This research discusses gender politics in Singapore with a focus on
Halimah binti Yakub's victory as the first female president elected in 2017.
Singapore has a parliamentary system of government with regular elections despite
single-party dominance that limits political competition. In this study, gender issues
in Halimah Yakub's victory are analyzed in the context of the political system and
policies, as well as the electoral process in Singapore and why Halimah could be
elected president in 2017. This research uses qualitative methods with data
collection from official documents and contextual analysis. The theories used in
this research are gender theory and participation theory. The results showed that
Halimah's victory was the result of a combination of electoral system factors,
racial affirmative policies, and Singapore's internal political dynamics.
