| dc.description.abstract | This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the main character and identify the type of character development he undergoes in the movie. Using a qualitative method, this study applies the theory of characterization by Griffith (2011) and the character arc theory by Weiland (2017). The data sources consist of the movie Whiplash and its script; the movie is analyzed for its visual scenes, while the script is used to examine the dialogue. The analysis reveals that Andrew is directly portrayed as a freshman student and an alternate drummer. He is also indirectly characterized as a complex character with several dominant traits. Initially, Andrew is depicted as introverted, timid, insecure, ambitious, close-minded, and dependent on external validation. As the story progresses, he transforms into the core drummer and develops new traits, becoming more courageous, confident, obsessive, open-minded, and capable of self-validation. Furthermore, Andrew’s character development includes a shift in belief: from accepting the Lie that greatness can only be achieved through external validation, suffering, and extreme sacrifice, to rejecting that notion and embracing the truth that true greatness requires self-validation and inner control. Based on these changes, Andrew’s transformation can be categorized as positive character development. | en_US |
