Analisis Konflik Karakter Utama dan Pengembangan Karakter dalam Fim Boyhood

Abstract

The main character Mason Evans Jr. in Richard Linklater's 2014 film Boyhood is the subject of this study, which examines the internal and external conflicts he faces and how they influence his character development throughout the course of the story. A realistic depiction of Mason's transition from boyhood to early adulthood is provided by the film's unusual twelve-year production. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the movie and its official script, drawing on Lajos Egri's theory of character development and Michael Meyer's theory of conflict. According to the research, Mason's internal conflicts—such as identity struggles, moral dilemmas, fear, and desire—as well as his external conflicts—such as conflicts with peers, family, society, and the environment—play a significant role in determining his psychological, sociological, and physiological development. The study comes to the conclusion that conflict—both internal and external—is necessary to promote genuine and significant character development, which is consistent with the trinity of drama and Egri's idea of the premise. This study adds to the body of knowledge on literature and movies by highlighting how emotionally appealing protagonists are developed through consistent, credible conflict.
