Ndikkar as a Martial Art in Karo Culture

Background: Ndikkar is a traditional martial art of the Karo people that features
distinctive movements and deep-rooted philosophical meanings. It is not merely a
physical practice but is also embedded with cultural and spiritual values that are
integrated into the daily life of the Karo community.
Objective: This study aims to describe the forms of movements and techniques
found in the Ndikkar martial art, as well as to explain the functions of Ndikkar in
the life of the Karo people.
Method: This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected
through literature studies from books, journals, online articles, and informal
interviews with a Ndikkar practitioner.
Result: The study found that Ndikkar includes various techniques such as Jurus
Pertahanen, Jurus Golek Harimau, and Jurus Langkah Sipitu, which focus on
defensive and evasive movements. Beyond its physical aspect, Ndikkar functions
as a tool for self-defense, a ritual expression, and a symbol of cultural identity
within the Karo community.
Conclusion: Ndikkar is a martial art that embodies the cultural and spiritual
values of the Karo people. Its preservation is essential to ensure that younger
generations continue to recognize and appreciate their ancestral heritage.
