The people of Langkat Regency use well water, both dug wells and bore wells, as their drinking water source. A survey showed that the manganese (Mn) content in several wells exceeds the water quality standards, with concentrations ranging from 0.991 mg/L to 2.809 mg/L. This study aims to analyze the risk management of Mn pollution in drinking water sources in Langkat Regency and its relationship with neurobehavioral symptoms in the community. The research method is cross sectional, involving 209 respondents who consume water from wells in Langkat Regency. Data were collected through a neurobehavioral symptom questionnaire (Q18), manganese concentration measurements, and community characteristics. The results showed that the variable most strongly associated with neurobehavioral symptoms was the manganese concentration, with a p-value of 0.001 and r = 0.566. The risk management results indicated that the safe residence time is 24–58 years, and the safe manganese concentration is 0.72–2.78 mg/L. A total of 32.5% of respondents are at risk of experiencing neurological disorders based on the Risk Quotient (RQ) value. This study provides important evidence for the development of manganese pollution risk management in drinking water sources to prevent neurobehavioral symptoms in the Langkat Regency community. Recommendations are provided for improving water quality monitoring and using activated carbon
filtration with rapid filtration.
